Corte Alemán embodies the fusion of German blacksmithing, Latin American culture and a modern approach to branding. The project is the brainchild of Marco Bollenbach, whose professional background spans marketing, communications, tourism and digital transformation. What began as an idea to raise the profile of high-quality knives from Solingen in South America gradually evolved into a cultural concept that bridges the worlds of craftsmanship, gastronomy, art and storytelling. Together with the Swabian knife refiner TYPEMYKNIFE®, this gave rise to a creative collaboration that combines traditional knife culture with contemporary urban art from Peru. It is not just about kitchen knives as tools, but about objects with character, provenance and cultural significance. Corte Alemán tells the story of precision, design, identity and the question of how craftsmanship and art can be reimagined internationally today

The Origins of Corte Alemán

Creativity as a defining source

The foundations of Corte Alemán were laid long before the platform itself came into being. Even as a child, painting, design and visual expression played an important role. Shapes, colours and compositions were not merely creative interests, but part of an early understanding of how images and aesthetics can evoke emotions. It was therefore only natural that he should aspire to become a graphic designer.

Despite this creative focus, my initial career choice was a more business-oriented path: marketing communications. Looking back, it was precisely this combination of creativity and strategic thinking that proved to be the crucial foundation for the later Corte Alemán project.

My years in marketing and communications

After completing my studies and gaining initial professional experience, I spent several years working in European marketing agencies. It was there that I developed a deep understanding of brand management, communication and strategic positioning. Successfully marketing products is not just about explaining their features. It is about building trust, bringing values to life and crafting stories that have a lasting impact.

It is particularly in agencies that it becomes clear just how closely design, language and perception are intertwined. Brands are not created solely through logos or advertising, but through consistency, identity and credibility. This understanding is now a key part of Corte Alemán’s philosophy.

Latin America as a source of cultural inspiration

The turning point in South America

A career in the tourism sector eventually took me to South America, and specifically to Lima in Peru. There, I gained not only a professional but, above all, a cultural understanding of Latin America. The region made a deep impression on me with its enormous diversity in terms of history, cuisine, landscapes and social dynamics.

Peru, in particular, has emerged in recent years as an international hub of modern gastronomy. The blend of indigenous traditions, regional ingredients, fine dining and innovative cuisine has highlighted just how closely culinary culture and national identity can be intertwined.

Cuisine as a cultural language

In countries such as Peru, Argentina and Colombia, food is not merely consumed – it tells stories. There, cuisine represents heritage, community, memory and cultural pride. It was precisely this perspective that later influenced the development of Corte Alemán.

After all, high-quality kitchen knives are much more than mere tools in the world of haute cuisine. They symbolise precision, respect for food, craftsmanship and aesthetics. In modern Peruvian cuisine in particular, this creates an environment in which knives can also be seen as an expression of cultural identity.

From Solingen knives to a cultural platform

The original idea

Corte Alemán was initially founded with a rather pragmatic approach: to raise awareness in South America of high-quality knives from Solingen. It soon became clear, however, that the market for inexpensive standard products was already oversaturated.

Instead, the focus shifted to the world of high-quality craftsmanship, durable materials and artisanal quality. The platform increasingly moved away from being purely a sales channel and towards becoming a curated brand and cultural project.

Urban art from Peru as a source of inspiration

The art scene in Lima

Neighbourhoods such as Barranco, Miraflores and Callao have developed into major hubs for urban art in recent years. Street art there has long since become more than just spontaneous wall art. It is an expression of social issues, cultural memory and modern visual identity.

Many artists combine traditional symbols with contemporary illustration, thereby creating a distinctive visual language.

Artistic collaboration

These initial contacts led to collaborations with artists such as Rustoy, Naylamp and Sipion. Each of them brings their own unique style to the table. It is precisely this diversity that makes the project so special.

The idea is to reinterpret cultural codes, figures and symbols on a knife blade – not as decoration, but as an artistic extension of a handcrafted object.

Corte Alemán: A Bridge Between Two Worlds

German precision meets Latin American energy

Corte Alemán operates at the intersection of two cultural worlds. On the one hand, there is Solingen steel, German precision and traditional blacksmithing. On the other, there is Latin American identity, gastronomy, urban art and creative expression.

It is precisely this combination that creates a brand universe which deliberately sets itself apart from traditional knife platforms.

Storytelling as part of brand identity

Modern brands are no longer built solely on products. What matters most is attitude, credibility and cultural relevance. A professional background in communication and digital transformation provides a vital foundation for this.

The Smart Master’s in Digital Transformation at ISIL in Lima also complements this profile. Digital platforms, visual storytelling and international partnerships now play a key role for brands seeking to build a global presence.

From Solingen knives to a cultural platform

The deliberate counterpoint

After spending time in Ecuador and Mexico, Marco Bollenbach now lives with his family outside the major cities – accompanied by four Rhodesian Ridgebacks.

This quieter setting provides a deliberate contrast to a project that straddles the worlds of international trade, art, gastronomy and digital communication.

Why a knife is more than just a tool

An excellent kitchen knife combines functionality with character. Weight, balance, the quality of the steel and the craftsmanship all play a key role. At the same time, a hand-forged knife embodies values such as precision, patience and a dedication to craftsmanship.

Particularly in an age of industrial mass production, there is a growing interest in products with a clear provenance and authenticity. Today, people are looking not just for quality, but for meaning. This is precisely where Corte Alemán comes in.

Discovering TYPEMYKNIFE®

The Beginning of a Collaboration

Our initial contact came about through an article on fake Damascus knives and cheap copies from Asian mass production. The post appeared on the blog of TYPEMYKNIFE®, a knife refinisher based in Schwäbisch Gmünd.

What started as a simple request to use some of the content quickly evolved into an in-depth discussion about shared values and perspectives

Quality Over Surface Appearance

In discussions with Managing Director Claus Ermlich, it became clear that both sides share a similar outlook. It is not about superficial designs or short-term trends, but about authentic materials, genuine craftsmanship, and sustainable quality.

This shared philosophy formed the basis for the first creative collaboration between Corte Alemán and TYPEMYKNIFE®.

Art on steel reimagined

From this dialogue emerged the idea of refining a high-quality, hand-forged kitchen knife with a velvety black carbon coating and combining it with an artistic interpretation of Peruvian culture.

Tourist folklore was never the focus. Rather, the goal was a modern visual language inspired by urban art, pre-Columbian symbolism, and contemporary Latin American aesthetics.
