TToday, Tormek is one of the world’s best-known manufacturers of high-quality sharpening machines for knives, tools and woodworking tools. For over fifty years, the Swedish company has been synonymous with precision tool sharpening, long-lasting quality and innovative sharpening systems. In particular, Tormek’s water-cooled sharpening machines have revolutionised the professional sharpening of knives, chisels, scissors and woodturning tools.

Whether it’s the T-4, the T-8 or the Kitchen Knife Sharpener – all machines are based on the same principle: controlled grinding with maximum precision and minimal material loss.

The story begins in the early 1970s in a small garage in Sweden. It was there that Torgny Jansson developed the first sander, thereby laying the foundations for a globally successful brand.

The Tormek Story – The History of the Legendary Grinding Machines from Sweden

T-4 Grinding Machines – Precision from Sweden since the 1970s

Tormek’s success story began in Sweden in the early 1970s. Torgny Jansson, an engineer and keen amateur woodworker, developed the first water-cooled sharpening machine for tools and knives in his garage. His idea was to create a professional sharpening machine that was easy to use, durable and suitable for both professional craftsmen and hobbyists alike.

The first Tormek grinding machine

The first prototype was based on a standard drill with an axially mounted grinding wheel. The grinding wheel runs in a water bath, which prevents the tools from overheating during grinding. It is precisely this water-cooled grinding system that has made Tormek famous to this day.

A particularly innovative feature was the almost silent power transmission via a rubber friction disc. This reduced the speed whilst increasing the torque – ideal for precise tool grinding.

The machine was compact, portable and did not require a water supply. This made it ideal for hobby workshops, joinery shops and professional craft businesses.

The founding is a well-polished story

In 1973, Torgny Jansson founded the company TORMEK AB – an abbreviation of ‘Torgnys Mekaniska Aktiebolag’. Production and marketing of the grinders initially began in Sweden.

However, the major breakthrough came first in the neighbouring Scandinavian countries and later in Germany. Sales of Tormek sharpening systems began in Europe as early as 1975.

The combination of high precision, ease of use and long-lasting quality appeals to joiners, woodturners, knife makers and professional craftspeople.

A Revolution in Tool Sharpening

In 1981, Tormek launched a completely redesigned sharpening machine. The external drill was replaced by a built-in electric motor. The new Tormek sharpening system continues to operate at low speed, is water-cooled and runs almost silently.

A new addition is the leather polishing wheel. This allows tools and knives to be polished and deburred straight after sharpening.

The combination of a whetstone and a honing wheel makes Tormek one of the most innovative tool sharpening systems in the world

The Development of the Grinding Jig

A key step in the development of Tormek machines was the introduction of the famous Tormek sharpening jigs.

These sharpening devices enable tools to be sharpened at a precise angle. The guide systems ensure that knives, chisels, scissors and woodturning tools can be sharpened with precision and consistency.

The height-adjustable universal support is at the heart of the Tormek system.

Today, Tormek offers a wide range of sharpening aids and accessories:
  • Knife sharpening devices
  • Fixtures for chisels
  • Sharpening aids for axes
  • Scissor-type grinding machines
  • Drill bit sharpening machines
  • Angle gauges and alignment aids

The modular Tormek sharpening system is now regarded worldwide as the standard in professional tool sharpening.
