Saved from the stake by Quasimodo for love, the witch and gypsy Esmeralda
In Victor Hugo`s famous novel, The Hunchback of Notre Dame takes place in and around the Gothic cathedral on the Ile de Paris.
Quasi Modo falls in love with the beautiful gypsy Esmeralda in a beguiling dance. Accused of murder and witchcraft, Esmeralda is rescued from the gallows by Quasimodo.
The two become a couple. True love triumphed unto death. Two intertwined skeletons were found in the tomb of Montfaucon, that of Esmeralda and that of Quasi Modos.
The blade of the dagger is from the Solingen knife manufacturer Linder. It is a high alloy 440A grade stainless steel in a very parallel slender dagger shape.
The hardness is given as 60°HRC. A Gothic motif is etched into the blade. It depicts figures of saints in floral, stylized buttresses.
In the tradition of so-called Latin knives, Latin aphorisms are also etched into them, which usually revolve around death, heaven, hell, revenge and honor.
One of the Latin prose lines reads “quod deus bene vertat” – which may God turn to good. The other side of the blade bears the inscription “sic transit gloria mundi” – this is how the glory of the world passes.
The blade just ends with its ricasso in a ferrule in the guard. The guard is elaborately decorated with silver ornaments and gallery bands.
It is richly set with precious stones, faceted garnets and cabochons. The guard symbolizes Mother Earth, the foundation of every church. The handle rises above it like a Gothic church tower.
Detailed upward striving church windows with pointed arches, two-part and Dreischneuß represent the finely chiselled architecture of the 14th century striving for light.
The handle ends in a steeple roof, octagonal like the whole handle, embodying the heavenly Jerusalem. All elements of the handle are assembled from 925 sterling silver sheets and wires.
A finial is enthroned on the top of the tower. The entire tower hood can be folded back, the handle opens and reveals a view of the light-flooded interior.
The windows are made of very thin bone discs, made from the key material of an old concert grand piano.
The secret interior gives rise to speculation, could a secret writing or even a poison capsule be hidden there? That remains open.
